Steve Boehlke

Steve Boehlke retired after 35 years of teaching, 24 of those years as Director of Choral Activities at Rosemount High School. Prior to Rosemount, he was choral director in Winthrop, Minnesota for eleven years. In addition to his choral work at Rosemount, he has worked in church music for over thirty-five years, most recently at Grace Lutheran Church in Apple Valley. Following his retirement from Rosemount, Mr. Boehlke taught choral music education courses and worked with student teachers at the University of Minnesota. He served as the interim choral director at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls where he conducted the Concert Choir and Chamber Singers and taught choral conducting. At the present time he supervises student teachers from Winona State University. In the fall of 2003, he organized the Minnesota Valley Men's Chorale, a chorus of 40 men that he serves as artistic director. He received his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from Minnesota State University at Mankato. He did additional work at the University of Minnesota and with Eph Ehly at the Conservatory of Music, University of Missouri, Kansas City on an advanced degree in choral conducting.

Steve has served the American Choral Directors Association of Minnesota in many leadership positions including Star of the North Circulation Chair, district chair, and state president from 1991-1993. In addition, he chaired the 1991 and 1992 Minnesota State conventions, served as Exhibits chair for the 1988 North Central Division Convention in Minneapolis, and served on the Convention Committee for the 1998 NCACDA convention. He completed his term as President of the North Central Division of ACDA when he chaired the 2000 division convention in Madison, Wisconsin, Currently he is a member of the F. Melius Christiansen Endowment committee.

He was named the Minnesota Music Educator's Association "Choral Educator of the Year" in 1990. In 1994, the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars named Steve a "Distinguished Teacher." In 1996, he was selected to receive one of the Outstanding Service Awards presented by Independent School District 196. In the fall of 2000, He was named the Choral Director of the Year byACDA of Minnesota. Steve was also a member of the Executive Board and Organizing Committee for the Sixth World Symposium on Choral Music, which was held in the Twin Cities in August 2002.

His choirs have appeared at the Minnesota Music Educators Mid-Winter Clinic, ACDA of Minnesota State Conventions, the St. Olaf Choral Festival, the 1988 North Central Convention, and at the Dorian Vocal Festival at Luther College. Steve and his choirs have toured Japan, England, Scotland, France, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Italy. Steve is an active clinician and has directed several district and conference honor choirs throughout the state.
