Job Description
January 2008 thru Corpus Christi (June 14, 2009)
The Cathedral Choir at the Cathedral of Saint
Paul leads the assembly in musical praise,
striving to bring to God the highest form of
worship through liturgical song. The Choir sings
music ranging from Gregorian chant to
Renaissance polyphony to music of contemporary
composers. The Choir specializes in chant and is
one of only a few choirs in North America that
interprets the 10th and 11th century St. Gall
and Metz neumes. The Choir encourages its
members to continually develop their musical
skills and abilities. The Cathedral Choir is
blessed to have ten trained singers to serve as
section leaders. The section leaders: • lead
their section by example, both in prompt and
regular attendance, and by careful and thorough
preparation of the pieces the choir sings. •
demonstrate and clarify, when asked, technical
aspects of good vocal technique. • lead
sectionals when necessary, and audition new
members. • answer questions (during breaks or
before/after rehearsal time) from others in the
section. • sing with a relaxed, resonant tone
that inspires others to find and/or enhance
their own resonance and singing style.
Responsibilities include serving as section
leader for Cathedral Choir rehearsals and
services, as well as some intermittent solo
work. The Cathedral Choir rehearses Wednesday
evenings from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. (September
through May) and sings at the 10 a.m. Sunday
Mass as well as for concerts and other
liturgical events. A complete schedule is
available on request. Pay scale: $45 per “event”
(rehearsal or service); approximately 80 events
during the year. Requirements: Regular
attendance at rehearsals and services, good
sight reading skills, ability to work well with
people, some knowledge of solo repertoire.
Interested individuals should contact Marilyn
Biery, Associate Director of Music, to schedule
an audition. Marilyn Biery (651) 357-1347
