1. Pitch – This is the first element that the
listeners notice and often becomes a primary
factor. Remember-the audition begins with an a
cappella scale.
2. Pop scooping – Just say no. There are so many
wonderful singers that do not scoop. The
listeners will most likely not choose one that
does.
3. Tone – Judges are listening for an age
appropriate, supported, open, free tone. It
should in no way be forced or sound “belted”.
4. Complete audition– Make sure that you listen
to your auditions prior to sending them in. If
your students’ audition is incomplete it will be
disqualified. Many times we receive auditions
that have been accidentally cut off or may have
an element missing.
5. Correct audition – Read the audition
directions carefully. There are different
directions for each choir and each voice part.
If directions are not followed, such as an
incorrect key or an accompanied song, your
student unfortunately will be disqualified.
6. Do Not Listen auditions – It is acceptable to
send in auditions that you know will not be
chosen. However, there is now a limit to how
many auditions each school can send in. We would
prefer that the auditions are what you believe
to be Honor Choir quality. If you do decide to
send them in anyway, include a note along with
the audition to Wayne Kivell and clearly mark on
their form - Do Not Listen. You will still need
to include the $7 fee for these auditions. This
will save the judges time and still allow your
student to have the experience of recording an
audition.
7. Have fun – Sending in auditions is a lot of
work for you but is a wonderful learning
experience for students. Thank you so much!
