“Celebrating Our Diversity through Music”
Issues Facing Elementary Music Teachers
in Culturally Diverse Classrooms
Friday, November 16, 2007
UMD Campus
Choir Room (VK 106)
9:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
(Registration is 8:30 - 9:00 a.m.)
At first this Immersion Day was primarily focused on the elementary level, but after consulting with many ACDA members, we realize that this is a “hot topic” facing music educators K-12! The goal of this Immersion Day is to better educate us all about cultural diversity, to be more effective teaching our students in culturally diverse classrooms, and understand what music is “culturally authentic.” Highlights of the day will include discussions with teaching artists and facilitators, live performances of authentic artists giving “hands on” demonstrations of useful lessons to bring back to your classrooms, and focusing on the cultures of African American, Somali, Hmong, and Mexican. You will leave with a multitude of resources and a better understanding of the needs of these students.
TOPICS:
1. Cultural awareness for large ethnic groups found in Minnesota (Hispanic, Somali, Hmong)
2. How is music viewed by a specific cultural group?
3. How to teach music to non-English speaking students
4. Communicating the value of music education to immigrant family members
5. Classroom management issues with culturally diverse classrooms
6. How can we as music educators become more culturally aware and responsive?
THE DAY WILL INCLUDE: Speakers/Panel Discussions/Sharing with colleagues/Reading
Session with Elementary Honor Choir Conductor, Earlene Rentz
This year's theme is "Nuts and Bolts" and will focus on those things
that make the music possible (but may not be the music-making itself)!
Your $25 registration fee gets you into the Symposium and the rest of
the State Convention events. This is a great deal that you do not want
to miss!

Their repertoire spans many periods and genres, including Gregorian chant, Renaissance motets, contemporary sacred works, art songs, world music, spirituals, and pop.
Cantus was founded in 1995 in Northfield, MN. Since then, the ensemble has performed more than 400 concerts, including appearances at AmericaFest, the Lied Center of Lawrence, Kansas, UCLA Live, the University of Chicago Presents, Merkin Concert Hall of New York City, Harvard University, the University of Wisconsin Union Theater and conventions of the American Choral Director’s Association.
