Concert / Event Announcement Details

Greetings from Wartburg!

I am excited to invite you to the 3rd annual “Real Men Sing” men’s choir festival at Wartburg College on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012.  This event is designed to “jump start” and motivate the men in your choral program early in the year.  We welcome directors, adult chaperones, church and community choir singers as well!

I am pleased to announce that the international award winning men’s chorus, Great Northern Union, will be our featured performing group this year.   All participants will have the opportunity to sing “Swing Down Chariot” with Great Northern Union at the finale concert and work with their conductor Mr. Peter Benson on this fun and energizing piece.  There will also be an invited performance by the Iowa City West HS Men’s Choir, Mr. Ryan Person, conductor at the finale concert.

NEW THIS YEAR!  There will be two separate festival choirs:

1.  A Grade 7 thru 9 /10th Festival choir  (Mr. Bruce Phelps, guest conductor)

2.  A Grade 9/10th – Adult Festival Choir (Dr. Lee Nelson, conductor)

***Directors can specify which choir their 9th and 10th grade students will participate in since some schools have all men in their HS choir.  Please contact festival coordinator Lexi Spain with any questions (alexis.spain@wartburg.edu).

Directors’ workshops will also be available regarding recruitment, retention, and teaching strategies for working with male voices. The workshops will be led by Mr. Ryan Person, Mr. Pete Benson and members of Great Northern Union.  Directors will also have the opportunity to observe rehearsals and visit with Mr. Bruce Phelps as he works with changing voices!

The day will culminate in a grand finale concert featuring the 7-9th/10th grade festival chorus, 9th/10th grade-adult festival chorus, a combined festival choir (all participants), Iowa City West Men’s Choir, Wartburg College Ritterchor and Festeberg and the Great Northern Union Chorus. This concert is open to the public (tickets are $5 at the door).
