ACDA-MN/MMEA CO-COMMISSION WORK

Each year the American Choral Directors Association of Minnesota and the Minnesota Music Educators Association annually commission a choral work by a Minnesota composer for one of the Minnesota All-State Choirs (Mixed, Mens, or Womens in rotation). Minnesota composers who are interested in being selected for this commission should sent samples of their work (scores, and recordings when possible) to the Executive Director, Bruce Becker, 12027 Gantry Lane, Apple Valley MN 55124.

The deadline for submission is July 15 of each year; selection is made by September 1. Rejected scores are kept on file for future consideration.

Criteria for the All-State choral compositions:

1. The choral composition shall be written on a rotation basis for one of the following voicings in the difficulty range of Class I/II from the Minnesota State High School League Music Handbook.

A. mixed voices (minimum divisi)
B. treble voices (SSA or SSAA)
C. male voices (TTB, TBB, or TTBB)

2. The composer will utilize a secular text appropriate for high school students.

3. The composition should be 2.5 to 3.5 minutes in duration.

4. The composition may be written for a cappella voices, with keyboard accompaniment, and/or with solo instrument accompaniment.

5. The completed co-commissioned work should be in the hands of the MMEA Vocal Vice-President and the ACDA of Minnesota Executive Secretary no later than April 1 in the year of the All-State Choir debut.

6. The current honorarium is $1400 equally divided between the two sponsoring organizations, and will be paid to the composer, with the first half paid by ACDA-MN upon acceptance of the contract, and the last half paid by MMEA upon the satisfactory completion and timely delivery of the work. The honorarium is increased by $50 each year.

7. All publication rights remain with the composer. In the event the composition is not published before the MMEA All-State Choir performances, MMEA will reproduce the score for the MMEA All-State Choir debut. MMEA shall reserve all rights of reproduction until the MMEA All-State Choir performance at the MMEA Mid-Winter Clinic in February. MMEA and ACDA of Minnesota shall not be responsible to the composer or any other party for any unauthorized reproduction of the score.
